just a reminder that I am out on a training day this coming monday (17th)
so the network aesthetics session on monday will not be happening as usual
instead I need you to do the following …
- find 10 examples of collaborative websites – websites that users can interact with and change – perhaps there is something that users are sharing, perhaps there is some interactive element (eg writing a story or adding to an image or sharing some files or adding to a discussion or adding to a wiki about a subject etc)
youtube, facebook, wikipedia, vimeo, deviant art etc are all examples of this – but these are VERY obvious – do not include these, I need you to find your own examples - post them as a list with your thoughts about each (probably no more than a couple of sentences each) include screengrabbed image and urls
I will want to go through these with you on wednesday – they MUST be done before then
I have posted a few examples below
then….
use your control panels to install at lest two forums/discussion boards to find out about how they work
i recommend you try
- punBB – a very simple forum relatively easy to use and style
- phpbb – very feature rich but more complex too or on servage try myBB
then…
use your control panels to install a couple of image galleries to find out about how they work – i recommend you try
- coppermine – feature rich but not as easy as you might hope to make it do what you want
- gallery – relatively easy to use
the way to do this is to install each into a new folder – WRITE DOWN THE ADDRESS, THE USERNAME AND THE PASSWORD
try new themes, try editing the themes, try changing the look add headers etc
you WILL need to read the help files, search the web for help, visit the home site for each of the bits of software
make sure you record all your results on your blogs with screengrabs and your thoughts on each – it’s not a problem if you break them as long as everything is documented and screengrabbed – if it breaks and you get lost just install another
be disciplined though and make sure everything is named properly so you don’t lose track of where everything is
and don’t forget BLOG BLOG BLOG BLOG!!!!!!!
other wise see you tuesday/wednesday
